Artist Mark Barone

Mark Barone, an admirable human being and artist, has undertaken a difficult and noble task: to memorialize some of the 5,500 dogs that are euthanized every day in US shelters, by painting their portraits with their name and date of death.  So far he has created 3,500 portraits. A museum is being created to show all these paintings, in order to remember the dogs, to raise awareness of this tragic situation, as well as to collect donations for the cause of shelter animals.
Mark Barone, un artista e una persona da ammirare, si e` scelto un compito difficile e nobile: di ricordare una parte dei 5.500 cani che ogni giorno vengono soppressi nei canili statunitensi, dipingendo i loro ritratti con il nome e la data della morte. Fino ad oggi ha creato 3,500 ritratti. E` in allestimento un museo che raccolga tutti i dipinti, sia per ricordare i cani, sia per incrementare la consapevolezza di questa tragica realtà, nonche` per raccogliere donazioni per la causa degli animali in canili.

Someone's having fun! - C''e` qualcuno che si diverte!

We spent the last few days planting fruit trees, repairing a 21 ft segment of collapsed dry wall (with expert help) and pulling previously cut ivy off of a large olive tree. I let the dogs run loose and they were all in heaven, but the one who had the biggest blast was the infamous Cirillo. The trouble-maker, the bully, the leader of the pack, the one who leads the others down the road to perdition.
Abbiamo trascorso i giorni passati a piantare alberi da frutta, a riparare circa 7 mt. di muretto a secco crollato (con l'aiuto di un esperto) e a tirare giu` da un grande ulivo dell'edera tagliata in precedenza. Ho lasciato liberi i cani ed erano tutti al settimo cielo, ma quello che piu` se l'e` spassata e` stato il famigerato Cirillo. Cirillo il provocatore, il bullo, il capo squadra, quello che porta gli altri sulla strada della perdizione.

Cirillo scava, Coco la rossa e Argo il santo osservano, mentre Luna si mette dietro Cirillo e salta qui e li` cercando di acchiappare al volo zolle di terra e pietre, che poi rosiccchia. 

It's not easy to get as filthy as he does, but Cirillo has his ways.
Non e` facile insozzarsi come fa lui, ma Cirillo ha i suoi metodi.

Every now and then a fight breaks out over ownership of the hole, but Argo does not participate, all this is beneath his dignity.  He usually prefers to remove himself from the chaos, looking down on it from a distance.
Ogni tanto scoppia qualche rissa per il possesso del buco, ma solo Argo non si abbassa a queste piccolezze, preferendo osservare a distanza. 

Sometimes a fig branch can be a handy headrest.
A volte un ramo di fico puo` tornare utile come poggiatesta. 

Oh yes, fruit trees were planted, retaining walls were repaired and an olive tree was cleaned up. I'm lucky to have guests who like to work!
Ah si`, quasi dimenticavo, sono stati piantati alberi da frutta, riparati muretti a secco e un ulivo tutto ripulito dall'edera. Sono fortunata di avere ospiti a cui piace lavorare!

Drifting hearts and canine apparitions - Cuori alla deriva e apparizioni canine

Collaged bits of paper, including pages from my Italian high school physics text book, stamps, stencils, acrylic paint, gel pens and markers, on watercolor paper. 

Pezzi di carta, tra cui pagine del mio libro di fisica dal liceo, timbri, stampi, pittura acrilica, penne gel e pennarelli, su carta da acquerello. 

The outline of the smaller dog and the top half of the larger one were right there in painted and collaged background, just waiting for me to make them more visible. Whenever I don't know what image to add to a background, all I have to do is stare at it for a while and something or part of something will show up. It's fun because I don't know what I'll see. 

Il profilo del cane piu` piccolo e la parte superiore di quello piu` grande erano li` nello sfondo fatto di pittura e collage, aspettando che io li evidenziassi. Quando non so che immagine aggiungere su uno sfondo, basta che lo fissi per un po` e qualcosa appare. E` divertente perche` non so cosa vedro`. 

Painting this was fun! Mi sono divertita a farlo!

I was already starting to think that maybe painting dogs was not such a hot idea, then I watched a lot of videos by Kerrie Evenson, an artist whose bold and carefree choice of colors and painting style inspired and influenced me to use colors I really like. You'd think that would be an obvious thing to do, but I guess not. 

So last night a painted this in a couple, maybe three hours. I enjoyed the process and the result makes me happy. Even on the morning after!

Gia` cominciavo a pensare che dipingere immagini di cani non era poi una grande idea, quando ho guardato tantissimi video di Kerrie Evenson, un'artista il cui spensierato e dinamico uso di colori e stile di pittura mi hanno influenzata ed ispirata ad usare i colori che piu` mi piacciono. Sembrerebbe una cosa ovvia da fare, ma si vede che per me non era cosi`.

Quindi, ieri sera in due o tre ore ho fatto questo dipinto. Mi sono divertita e il risultato mi fa sorridere. Persino la mattina dopo!

E` il mio cane Argo i quale, apparso qui il 25 luglio vicino alla morte, adesso pesa 40 chili e sta benone!

Women and dogs

When I draw a woman's face I see this being staring back at me and I wonder where the heck she came from. From my subconscious, I suppose. Sometimes they bug me and I decide that I am moving on to something else, that I will resist the impulse to draw a female face, but it is difficult to do.
After these two babes, the alien princess and the pin-up, I decided to move on to dogs, but don't know how long it will last. Both the "pin-up" and the dog on the right were there on the page, barely visible after I put down the background, waiting for me to give them a more definite shape, so I did as I was told. Honestly. Of the woman, I saw the breasts, the shoulders and the hair, of the dog, the ears, the nose and one eye. If you use several layers of paint, scraped on and rubbed off, you are bound to see something in there.

Quando disegno un volto femminile vedo questo essere che mi guarda e mi chiedo da dove diavolo venga. Dal mio subconscio, immagino. A volte mi danno ai nervi e decido che comincero` a disegnare qualcosa di diverso, che resistero` all'impulso di disegnare un volto femminile, ma e` difficile. 
Dopo queste due, la principessa aliena e la bambolona, ho deciso di dedicarmi ai cani, ma non so quanto durera`. Sia la bambolona che il cane a destra erano li` sulla pagina, appena visibili dopo che avevo dipinto lo sfondo, che aspettavano che io gli dessi una forma definitiva. Cosi` ho fatto come hanno voluto loro. Davvero. Della donna ho visto il seno, le spalle e il capelli e del cane le orecchie, il naso e un occhio. Se usi vari strati di pittura, spalmati su e strofinati via, e` inevitabile scorgerci qualche immagine. 

Maybe I should do women AND their dogs. 

Forse dovrei dipingere le donne INSIEME ai loro cani.

The way they were, just 10 months ago, while Sergeant Cirillo instructed the troops. Although they occasionally try to rebel, he never lets them forget who's in charge.
Come erano appena dieci mesi fa, mentre il sergente Cirillo addestrava le giovani reclute. Anche se ogni tanto cercano di ribellarsi, lui non fa mai dimenticare loro chi comanda.

Lately I've been walking them behind the house, outside their enclosure, with Cirillo on leash and the girls off, because they tend to stick around. Today I thought, what the heck, I'll let poor Cirillo off the leash too, and within seconds they were far in the distance.
Ultimamente li porto a fare una passeggiatina dietro la casa, fuori dal loro recinto, con Cirillo al guinzaglio e le due "sore" senza, perche` in genere loro non si allontanano. Oggi ho pensato, ma si`, lasciamo libero anche il povero Cirillo ed in un batter d'occhio erano lontanissimi.

Another second and they had gone through the hedge, onto the neighbor's land.
Ancora un altro secondo ed erano spariti oltre la siepe, nel terreno del vicino.

Fortunately my fears of them being killed by cars, hunters or the pack of wild dogs were unfounded and they returned 20 minutes later - happy tongues hanging out.
Per fortuna i miei timori che venissero uccisi da una macchina, da un cacciatore o dal branco di cani selvatici sono risultati infondati e sono tornati dopo 20 minuti, con le felici lingue appese.
This is Argo the Good. He doesn't associate with young rebels.

Like a long vacation - Come una lunga vacanza

I garden, I read, I pet the dogs, I nap. The other day I realized that even with various difficulties I am facing here, these could very well be some of the best days of my life, so I need to enjoy them to the max. A vacation spent between Puglia and Naples in May/June of 2010 was also pretty phenomenal, but in a a more dramatic way. A three week trip in 2007 around Italy with my brother and his girlfriend was pretty amazing, and there have been many more exceptional times - I guess I've been pretty lucky.
Faccio giardinaggio, leggo, accarezzo i cani, dormo il pomeriggio. L'altro giorno mi sono resa conto che anche con le varie complicazioni che sto affrontando qui, questi potrebbero benissimo essere tra i migliori giorni della mia vita e, quindi, me li devo godere al massimo. Anche una vacanza trascorsa tra Puglia e Napoli a maggio/giugno del 2010 e` stata fenomenale, ma in un modo piu` drammatico. E poi tre settimane nel 2007 in giro per l'Italia con mio fratello e la sua compagna non sono stati niente male. In effetti ci sono tanti altri periodi eccezionali - mi sa che sono stata molto fortunata.

I'm happy that I have a roof over my head and greens from my garden sauteing on the stove with cherry tomatoes, garlic, red pepper flakes, capers and black olives - to go over pasta with some crumbled Feta cheese.
sono felice di avere un tetto sopra la testa e verdure dal mio orto che si stanno in questo momento cuocendo con pomodorini, aglio, peperoncino, capperi e olive nere - da mettere poi sulla pasta con del formaggio Feta sbriciolato.
We've covered the cats, but what about the pack of stray dogs?

From a couple of weeks ago, Cirillo leading five puppies (my two and their 3 stray sisters) on a wild goose chase. Ecco Cirillo un paio di settimane fa che porta sulla cattiva strada una banda di cinque cuccioli (i miei due e le loro tre sorelle randage).

Who is she? - Chi e`?

As soon as I had made a pencil sketch of this face I "saw" a head scarf and cowl, or wimple, on her and drew it in. Now I'm stuck because I don't know who she is and what she wants to do. If I am going to paint women's faces again I need to use images of real woman as models, otherwise they end up looking like this one: sort of a Barbie version of the Virgin Mary! I painted a similar image a couple of years ago, and at least this one looks more human and happy.
Quando ho fatto lo schizzo a matita di questo volto, ho "visto" un velo o soggolo che lo circondava e cosi` l'ho aggiunto. Adesso non riesco ad andare avanti perche` non so chi sia e cosa voglia fare. Se dipingero` di nuovo volti di donne dovro` usare immagini di donne vere come modelle, altrimenti finiscono come queste: delle specie di versioni Barbie della Vergine! Ho dipinto un'immagine simile a questa un paio di anni fa e almeno questa sembra un poco piu` umana e felice.

I think I should draw dogs. A certainly have a vast supply of models.
Credo che farei meglio a dipingere cani. Certo che di modelli disponibili ne ho un'infinita`.

A prelude to Spring - Un preludio alla primavera

Last week the sun shone brightly and the air was warm for several days in a row. Even though today it's raining and cold it doesn't matter, because we've had a taste of things to come and know that Spring is on its way. It can make all the difference in the world. I spent a good part of those days basking in the sun's glow, reading a little, looking around me, enjoying the silence.
La scorsa settimana abbiamo avuto vari giorni in cui il sole ci ha riscaldati e illuminati e anche se oggi di nuovo piove e fa freddo, poco importa, perche` abbiamo avuto un assaggio di cose a venire e sappiamo che la primavera e` in arrivo. E questo puo` cambiare tante cose. Ho passato buona parte di quei giorni scaldadomi al sole sul terrazzo, leggendo un poco, guardandomi attorno e godendomi il silenzio. 

I wasn't the only one enjoying this prelude to Spring. 

Non ero l'unica a godermi questo preludio alla primavera. 

There were flowers dancing in my head.

Still fireplaces and dogs - Ancora camini e cani

Nearly a month has passed since my last post and all I can say is that everything is pretty mellow around here at the moment. Particularly when the dogs are very tired and not tearing plants out of the ground or shredding their bed or barking incessantly at wandering dogs and chirping birds. Yesterday afternoon was such a moment because they had all run off and disappeared for 4 hours and returned exhausted, of course. Actually Luna (the black and tan one) returned after 2 hours looking like she had seen a ghost, or the Italian version: "sorci verdi", that is: green rats. Cirillo was so tired that he let the two sisters lie on his bed, but only after scolding them a few times.
E` passato quasi un mese da quando ho scritto l'ultima volta e posso solo dire che per il momento qui e` tutto molto tranquillo. Particolarmente quando i cani sono molto stanchi e non stanno estirpando piante dalla terra o facendo a pezzetti il loro letto o abbaiando senza sosta a cani randagi o a uccellini che cinquettano. Ieri pomeriggio e` stato cosi` perche erano tutti e tre scappati e spariti per 4 ore e, naturalmente, sono tornati sfiniti. In realta` Luna, quella nero focato, e` tornata dopo due ore con lo sguardo di una che ha visto i sorci verdi! Cirillo era cosi` stanco che ha permesso alle due sorelle di sdraiarsi sul suo letto, ma solo dopo vari ammonimenti.

while the other one had to be satisfied with a patch of sun, mentre l'altra si doveva accontentare di un rettangolo di sole.

Finally it was Luna's turn as well. Finalmente e` arrivato anche il turno di Luna. 

In the end, it was a cuddle fest, at least for the time being. Infine, tutti amici, almeno per il momento.
