San Francisco or Ceglie Messapica?

After yesterday's scorching heat I was very surprised to go outside at 6:30 this morning and see this.
For a moment I wondered if I was in Ceglie Messapica or in San Francisco.
Taken in San Francisco almost exactly one year ago, on September 16th, 2010.
But when at 7 am I was already spritzing sweat, I knew I was in southern Italy.

I have been gathering so many figs lately, basically from only two trees, that I decided to dry some. If the drying process goes well, they will be stuffed with almonds and fennel seeds.
Every time I pick them I give half to a friend and still have more than I should eat left for me. Is it possible to eat too many deliciously sticky and sweet organic figs? Don't think so!
Using all the necessary precautions, I also picked a tiny fraction of the cactus pears that this land so generously offers.

Figs, cheese and music - Fichi, formaggi e musica

There is a tradition here in Ceglie Messapica called "Thursdays in September". The story goes that it is a time for friends to gather at their houses in the country to drink last year's wine and make room for the new: sounds like a great excuse to eat, drink and be merry.
Last night I celebrated the first of these Thursdays at the Masseria LoJazzo where they hosted an event focused on the many varieties of local figs and their historic place in the economy of Ceglie Messapica.
We watched a fascinating documentary on the history of bread-making in Ceglie, listened to a panel discussion on figs, ate plates of figs, grapes and cheese, and listened to live folk music until 2 am, all in a breathtaking location on 90 plus acres of land.
