Time flies! - Il tempo vola!

Yikes, it's been a month since my last post! I think Facebook, where I can just quickly add a photo almost every day, with a brief caption, is starting to take precedence over my blog.
I've been very busy this past month and enjoying it all, but for the moment I will post only photos from yesterday and today.
Yesterday a group of us visited Masseria Abate Nicola, built in 1719 and modified several times in the 1800s. A masseria is basically a fortified farmhouse. The majority of masserie are found in Puglia and in Sicily and many have been beautifully restored and are now used as resorts, B&Bs or to host events. The long structure with all the arches was once the sheep barn.
Caspita, e` gia` passato un mese dal mio ultimo post! Credo che Facebook, dove posso velocemente aggiungere un po` di foto quasi ogni giorno, con una breve descrizione, stia pian piano prendendo il posto del mio blog.
Sono stata molto occupata questo mese con diverse attivita` davvero piacevoli, ma mi limitero` a mostrare solo qualche foto di ieri ed oggi. 
Ieri ho visitato la Masseria Abate Nicola, costruita nel 1719 a modificata varie volte nell'ottocento. 
La lunga struttura con tutti gli archi era una volta l'ovile. 

Today, with two friends, I set out to visit the famous and unique Giardini di Pomona, a not for profit organization that promotes education about the environment and biodiversity, through the protection and the propagation of cultivated fruit trees, with particular attention to those that are in danger of extinction.
Unfortunately they were closed because the people in charge were taking part in an important march in Cisternino to promote the protection of degraded lands and to safeguard centuries-old olive trees. So, since we could not find the location of the march, we took a walk through Cisternino.
Oggi, con due amici, sono partita da casa per visitare i famosi e unici Giardini di Pomona, ma purtroppo erano chiusi per la partecipazione dei responsabili all'importante Marcia per la Terra. Non siamo riusciti a raggiungere il luogo della marcia, per cui abbiamo fatto una bella passeggiata in Cisternino. 

From Cisternino we went to the antique and used market in Martina Franca, where I bought a little stool to use in the garden.
Da Cisternino siamo passati al mercato dell'antiquariato e dell'usato di Martina Franca, dove ho comprato un piccolo sgabello da usare in giardino. 

After lunch I went home, changed into my gardening clothes and went out to lay down the cardboard layer of sheet mulching for my new vegetable patch-to-be, before the rain expected later tonight. It should have been fast and easy, but it wasn't because I kept changing my mind about the location. I thought I had decided, but obviously I hadn't, because first I laid down the cardboard here.
Dopo pranzo sono tornata a casa, mi sono messa i vestiti per lavorare in giardino e sono andata fuori per mettere giu` lo strato di cartone per la pacciamatura per un nuovo orto, prima delle piogge previste per stanotte. Sarebbe stata una cosa abbastanza facile e veloce, se non fosse stato per il fatto che ho cominciato a cambiare idea sul luogo dell'orto, cosa che credevo di aver deciso in modo definitivo, ma non era cosi`. Prima ho messo il cartone qui, dove era stata appositamente tagliata l'erba. 

But it just didn't feel right - it was too far from the house (permaculture advises keeping close to home the places that you need to visit often), too close to the road and, therefore, too much in view of every passerby. So I moved everything to the other side, at the same distance from the road, but out of view. No dice, it was still too far from the house and from water faucets. So I ended up moving all the way back up to the house to a spot that gets a lot of sun, but that I had initially discarded because I did not feel it would be aesthetically pleasing, since I have to fence it to protect it from dogs, cats and whatever night creatures might come by. It's not ideal, but it has more positives than negatives.
Ma non ero convinta - era troppo lontano dalla casa (la permacultura consiglia di tenere vicino alla casa i luoghi che devi visitare spesso), troppo vicino alla strada e, quindi, sotto gli occhi di tutti i passanti. Allora ho spostato il tutto dall'altro lato, alla stessa altezza, ma nascosto dalla strada. Niente da fare, era ancora troppo lontano dalla casa a dai rubinetti per l'acqua. Alla fine ho finito col tornare fin su alla casa in un punto dove c'e` molto sole, ma che in un primo momento avevo escluso perche` non lo trovavo esteticamente piacevole, visto che lo devo recintare per proteggerlo dai cani, dai gatti e da eventuali animaletti notturni. Non e` l'ideale, ma ha piu`  punti a favore che contro.

Prima di crollare dalla stanchezza ho messo qualche pezzo piu` piccolo di cartone su una parte dell'orto gia` esistente. 

Now let's hope it rains tonight so I can proceed with the rest of the sheet mulching layers.
Adesso speriamo che stanotte piova, cosi` potro` procedere con i rimanenti strati della pacciamatura. 

Someone's having fun! - C''e` qualcuno che si diverte!

We spent the last few days planting fruit trees, repairing a 21 ft segment of collapsed dry wall (with expert help) and pulling previously cut ivy off of a large olive tree. I let the dogs run loose and they were all in heaven, but the one who had the biggest blast was the infamous Cirillo. The trouble-maker, the bully, the leader of the pack, the one who leads the others down the road to perdition.
Abbiamo trascorso i giorni passati a piantare alberi da frutta, a riparare circa 7 mt. di muretto a secco crollato (con l'aiuto di un esperto) e a tirare giu` da un grande ulivo dell'edera tagliata in precedenza. Ho lasciato liberi i cani ed erano tutti al settimo cielo, ma quello che piu` se l'e` spassata e` stato il famigerato Cirillo. Cirillo il provocatore, il bullo, il capo squadra, quello che porta gli altri sulla strada della perdizione.

Cirillo scava, Coco la rossa e Argo il santo osservano, mentre Luna si mette dietro Cirillo e salta qui e li` cercando di acchiappare al volo zolle di terra e pietre, che poi rosiccchia. 

It's not easy to get as filthy as he does, but Cirillo has his ways.
Non e` facile insozzarsi come fa lui, ma Cirillo ha i suoi metodi.

Every now and then a fight breaks out over ownership of the hole, but Argo does not participate, all this is beneath his dignity.  He usually prefers to remove himself from the chaos, looking down on it from a distance.
Ogni tanto scoppia qualche rissa per il possesso del buco, ma solo Argo non si abbassa a queste piccolezze, preferendo osservare a distanza. 

Sometimes a fig branch can be a handy headrest.
A volte un ramo di fico puo` tornare utile come poggiatesta. 

Oh yes, fruit trees were planted, retaining walls were repaired and an olive tree was cleaned up. I'm lucky to have guests who like to work!
Ah si`, quasi dimenticavo, sono stati piantati alberi da frutta, riparati muretti a secco e un ulivo tutto ripulito dall'edera. Sono fortunata di avere ospiti a cui piace lavorare!

Anniversary of my big move - Anniversario del mio trasloco

One year ago today I moved to Ceglie Messapica (BR) from San Francisco, California. I still don't know if it was the "right" thing to do or not, but I may never know, so I won't think about it too much. In the meanwhile I celebrated by enjoying the fall colors and gardening on Saturday and today. With expert and strong help, I planted 2 Pyracanthas, 2 Lavenders, 4 Lantanas, 3 Bouganvilles, one Cornus mas, a small peach tree, a small almond tree, some veggies and several succulents. We also did a lot of pruning and burning of debris. The next two days will be dedicated to pruning the olive trees that were not pruned in March.
Cirillo caused as much trouble as he possibly could. Maybe he thought he was helping.......

Oggi ha fatto un anno che mi sono trasferita a Ceglie Messapica (BR) da San Francisco in California. Ancora non so se ho fatto la cosa "giusta" o no e forse non lo sapro` mai, quindi non ci voglio pensare troppo. Intanto ho festeggiato godendomi i colori autunnali e dedicandomi sabato e oggi al giardinaggio. Con l'aiuto di una persona con molta piu` forza di me ho piantato 2 piracanta, 2 lavande, 4 lantane, 3 bouganvilla, un corniolo, un piccolo pesco, un piccolo mandorlo, alcune verdure e varie piantine grasse. Abbiamo anche potato molto e bruciato quello che non servira` per il camino. I prossimi due giorni verranno dedicati alla potatura degli ulivi che non sono stati potati a marzo scorso.
Cirillo ha creato tutto lo scompiglio di cui e` stato capace. Forse pensava di aiutare.....

I'm so happy I took photos from the beginning, because even though I remember what everything looked like, it's difficult to believe my eyes when I look at this now and see what sun and warmth and water were able to do! Here's a photographic summary.
Sono proprio contenta di aver scattato foto sin dall'inizio, perche` anche se mi ricordo come era prima, e` difficile credere ai miei occhi quando adesso guardo quest'aiuola e vedo quello che il sole e il calore e l'acqua hanno potuto fare. Eccone un riassunto fotografico.

Hugelkultur

Lately I have been re-reading Toby Hemenway's excellent book "Gaia's Garden - a guide to home-scale permaculture", which I first read in 2007 for the permaculture design certification course I attended in San Francisco, California. I came across a page in which he describes hugelkultur, or mound culture, so I started searching for more information online and found this, watched some videos on youTube and decided that it would be my next experiment. What I built today is the result of what I could remember, combined with my you-do-what-you-can-with-what-you've-got attitude.
First I cut down the grass and left it in place, then placed the larger chunks of rotting and not-yet-rotting wood that I had, threw in a bit of biochar for good measure, piled thin dry branches and twigs on top, stomped on them, added a few vegetable scraps and a lot of cut grass, wetted it down, then piled soil on top. I built it right next to a mound of soil that was driving me nuts, because I kept tripping over it, and used the soil from that mound as the top layer for the hugelkultur mound. Hopefully this new mound is too large to trip over - about 2' high by 4' long!
Ultimamente sto rileggendo l'eccellente libro di Toby Hemenway, intitolato "Gaia's Garden - a guide to home-scale permaculture", che ho letto per la prima volta per il corso di permacultura che ho completato nel 2007 in San Francisco, California. Una pagina di questo libro descrive l'hugelkultur, o coltivazione su un cumulo, quindi ho fatto un po` di ricerche online e trovato questo, ho guardato alcuni video su youTube e ho deciso che sarebbe stato il mio prossimo esperimento. Quello che ho realizzato oggi e` il risultato di quanto sono riuscita a ricordarmi abbinato al mio recente atteggiamento del si-fa-quel-che-si-puo`-con-quello-che-si-ha.
Prima ho tagliato l'erba, lasciandola cadere dov'era, poi ho messo giu` i pezzi piu` grossi di legno che stava marcendo o no, vi ho aggiunto qualche pezzo di biochar tanto per, ammucchiandovi sopra ramoscelli secchi e meno secchi, li ho pestati, ho aggiunto qualche avanzo vegetale e molta erba falciata, l'ho bagnato il tutto e l'ho ricoperto con circa 5 cm di terra. L'ho costruito accanto a un cumulo di terreno che da tempo mi dava fastidio perche` ci inciampavo sempre, usando la terra di quel cumulo per lo strato finale del hugelkutur. Si spera che questo nuovo cumulo sia troppo grande per inciamparvi - alto circa 70 cm e lungo 1,40 m!

I put some branches over it, just in case the pack of dogs decides to tear it apart. By the way, today I heard puppy whimpers coming from the den I showed you yesterday. I pray to God there are only one or two! As soon as they heard our voices they stopped and didn't make a peep for rest of the afternoon. Their mother has already taught them to distrust humans. Good idea!

Vi ho poggiato sopra dei rami secchi, nel caso il branco di cani decida di smantellarlo. A proposito, oggi ho sentito il piagnucolio di cuccioli che veniva dal rifugio che vi ho fatto vedere ieri. Prego Dio che siano solo uno o due! Appena hanno sentito le nostre voci si sono zittiti e non si sono fatti piu` sentire per il resto del pomeriggio. La madre gli ha gia` insegnato a non fidarsi degli esseri umani e ha fatto bene!

Monday I will put some volunteer squash (I think) seedlings that came up in the worm and manure pile, that way if the experiment doesn't work, I will not have lost too much. 

Lunedi` vi piantero` delle piantine spontanee di zucca (credo) spuntate in cima al cumulo di letame e vermi, cosi` se l'esperimento non funziona non avro` perso molto.

Gardening and collaging - Giardinaggio e collages

The olive trees hadn't been pruned in over 20 years. I tried my best to have them pruned in a way that was not too radical, but I guess my words were just dust in the wind because they were stripped naked. I was not happy, and I said so...... I was told not to fear, that in a few months they will explode with new life, but I have a very hard time believing it. I just hope they survive - I didn't even get a chance to warn them the day before. I don't know why it is, but I hate radical pruning. 

Gli ulivi non venivano potati da piu` di 20 anni. Ho fatto del mio meglio per cercare di farli potare in un modo non troppo radicale, ma si vede che le mie parole sono state come polvere al vento perche` sono stati denudati. Non ero affatto felice e l'ho fatto presente.........mi e` stato detto di non temere, che fra pochi mesi esploderanno di nuova vita, ma stento a crederci.  Spero solo che sopravvivano - non ho neanche avuto l'opportunita` di avvisarli il giorno prima. Non so perche`, ma odio le potature drastiche.

It's a jungle out there! E` una giungla li` fuori!

The more time I spend in the garden the more I realize how little I know about world of nature that surrounds me.
A couple of evenings ago I went out to the house in the country and was greeted by a person who is working there, with the warning that the "processionary" was around the corner and to absolutely not get anywhere near it because it is very dangerous. I, of course, said "what?"
So I went around the corner and sure enough there was an odd looking row of caterpillars slithering along on the pavement, nose to tail. Fortunately I was warned or I would surely have gotten down on all fours and stuck my camera in their faces, and would have been very, very sorry.
Now that I've done my research I am even more worried and don't know exactly what I am supposed to do. They can cause severe allergic reactions in humans, even blindness, and can be fatal to dogs and cats. They look harmless but they are not and they are indeed called the Pine Processionary caterpillar.

Piu` tempo passo in giardino e piu` mi rendo conto di quanto conosca poco il mondo della natura che mi circonda. 
Un paio di sere fa sono andata alla casa in campagna dove una persona che sta lavorando li` mi e venuto incontro per avvisarmi che dall'altra parte della casa c'era "la processionaria" e assolutamente di non avvicinarmici perche` e` molto pericolosa. Naturalmente io ho risposto "come?"
Quindi sono andata a guardare e, in effetti, c'era una strana fila di lombrichi che strisciavano sull'asfalto, naso a coda. Per fortuna ero stata avvisata perche` altrimenti mi sarei messa carponi per schiaffargli la macchina fotografica in faccia e me ne sarei pentita, ma proprio tanto.
Adesso che ho fatto le mie ricerche sono ancora piu` preoccupata e non so esattamente cosa fare. Possono provocare gravi reazioni allergiche nelle persone, persino la cecita`, e posso essere letali per cani e gatti. Sembrano innocui ma non lo sono e si chiamano infatti La Processionaria del Pino.  

OK, next. A few weeks ago I planted seeds in trays in a commercial organic soil mix straight out of the bag. The trays were given to me by a garden center and were previously used. Anyway, in one of the trays clusters of tiny yellowish beads appeared that look like some sort of egg. They started out about the size of millet and some are now a little smaller than lentils. Anyone have a clue as to what kind of creepy thing this could hatch? 

Avanti il prossimo. Qualche settimana fa ho piantato dei semi in semenzai di plastica usando del terriccio biologico comprato in busta. I semenzai mi erano stati dati da un vivaista ed erano usati. In ogni caso, in uno dei semenzai sono apparsi dei grumi di piccolissime palline giallognole che sembrano delle uova di non so che genere. All'inizio erano della misura del miglio e adesso alcune sono un po' piu` piccole di una lenticchia. Qualcuno ha un'idea di quale strano animale potrebbe sgusciarne? 

The next mystery item is much sweeter and prettier. The flowers are about half an inch long and have a fragrance that is reminiscent of Sweet Alyssum. The leaves are about 5 inches long. 

Il prossimo oggetto misterioso e molto piu` dolce e carino. I fiori sono lunghi circa 1 cm. o poco piu` ed hanno un profumo che ricorda l'Alisso. Le foglio sono lunghe piu` o meno 12 cm. 

One more. The tree with wicked thorns. I know because I've tangled with it, trying to liberate it from the strangle-hold of ivy! I'm not even sure if it's still alive, but Spring has sprung so I will soon know. 

Ancora uno. L'albero con le spine malvage. Credetemi, mi ci sono scontrata piu` volte cercando di liberarlo dall'edera che lo avvinghia! Non so neanche se e` vivo, ma lo sapro` presto perche` me lo rivelera` la primavera.
