A dose of orange - Una dose d'arancione

My recent posts have been so full of green and brown that I felt the need for an abundant dose of orange. All photos were taken between November 4, 2010 and February 14th of this year.
Recentemente i post sono cosi` totalmente verdi e marroni che ho sentito il bisogno di una buona dose di arancione. Tutte le foto sono state scattate tra il 4 novembre 2010 e il 14 febbraio di quest'anno.

Another small experiment - Un altro piccolo esperimento

Yesterday I discovered that there were puddles of water in my father's former workshop, not because of the skylight that thieves long ago broke into, but because a mat of soil and pine needles several inches thick, with grass and weeds growing on it, was covering certain areas of the roof, in particular, the place where water that collects on the roof is supposed to drain off.  A similar situation that went unnoticed for years is the reason the entire roof of the main house had to be replaced.
Ieri ho scoperto che c'erano laghetti di acqua nella vecchia officina di mio padre, non per la lucernaia che i ladri hanno sfondato anni fa, ma perche` su alcuni parti del tetto si era formato un tappetino di terra e aghi di pino, dello spessore di vari centimetri, con erba e piantine che vi crescevano sopra, in particolare proprio nel punto da cui doveva scorrere l'acqua raccolta sul tetto. Una situazione simile di cui nessuno si era accorto per anni e` stata la ragione per cui e` stato necessario sostituire l'intero tetto della casa principale. 

Fortunately Sergio was able to immediately get up there and shovel everything off onto the ground below, where I loaded most of into the wheelbarrow.

Per fortuna Sergio ha potuto subito provvedere a levarlo con la pala, facendolo cadere sul suolo sottostante dove io l'ho caricato nella carriola. 

As you can see it was nice and compact so I decided to put it green side down in my vegetable plot like an old carpet or the cardboard used in sheet mulching. On top I will add some soil and then dry grass.
It may not do any good, but I'm pretty sure it won't hurt.
Come potete vedere i pezzi erano belli compatti, quindi ho deciso di metterli nell'orticello con la parte verde (l'erba che vi cresceva dentro) in giu`, tipo un vecchio tappeto o il cartone che si puo` usare nel fare la pacciamatura detta appunto "a tappeto". Sopra aggiungero` uno strato di terra e dell'erba secca. Forse non fara` del bene, ma sono abbastanza sicura che non fara` del male.

In the future flower beds I put a few pieces of these mats and some nice soil that years of not cleaning up had created under a tree, but that I won't use for edible plants because too many dogs have spent too much time there.

Nelle aiuole destinate ai fiori ho messo qualche pezzo di questi "tappetini" e un bel terriccio che da anni si stava formando sotto a un albero, ma che non voglio utilizzare dove crescero` piante commestibili, visto che ci hanno passato troppo tempo i cani. 

At this point it's all an experiment!

So pretty and so aggressive - Cosi` bella e cosi` aggressiva

A lot of work has been done since my last "agricultural" post on the 12th.
I started a compost pile by laying down some twigs and then layering green, brown, green, brown, soil, moisture and so on. And yes, I admit it, I also added a bit of diluted urine.
Sono stati fatti molti progressi dal mio ultimo post "agricolo" del 12. 
Ho avviato un cumulo per il compost, cominciando con un uno strato di ramoscelli, poi del verde, del marrone, verde, marrone, terreno, acqua e cosi` via. Ebbene si`, lo ammetto, ho aggiunto anche un po' di pipi` diluita. 

I planted another row of onions and prepared a row for potatoes that I will plant in the next few days. 

Ho piantato un'altra fila di cipolle e ho preparato una fila per delle patate che piantero' nei prossimi giorni. 

Sergio, who has been helping me with this endeavor for the last couple of weeks, grafted cherries onto some of the many wild cherry trees, Prunus mahaleb, that are present on the land. I wrote about this plant and my favorite use for it when I was attending the Permaculture course in 2007. He also grafted a couple of pear trees, one onto a wild pear and one onto an old cultivated pear. 

Sergio, la persona che mi sta aiutando a compiere questa impresa, ha innestato dei ciliegi su alcuni dei molti ciliegi selvatici, Prunus mahaleb, che crescono nella mia campagna. Ho scritto di questa pianta e dell'uso che preferisco farne (ma  tutto in inglese) quando ho frequentato il corso di Permacoltura nel 2007. Ha anche innestato un paio di peri, uno su un pero selvatico e uno su un vecchio pero coltivato. 

I wanted a small vegetable plot near the house, which would not require going up and down terraced walls and tramping through uneven soil and rocks and which, because of the 10 or so wild dogs that roam the place and poop everywhere (not out in the fields of course, but close to the house and up and down the driveways - bless their ungrateful little hearts) had to be enclosed. So Sergio was able to collect found bits of this and that around the place and make it at a cost of zero for the materials, which are: two limestone blocks, three cement blocks, 6 cement posts from the long-gone vineyard, discarded pipes from the remodel (I have been assured by all concerned that they contain absolutely no lead), a wooden light pole abandoned decades ago, that he cut down, and a roll of wire that we found in my father's workshop. 

It's funky, but it's all recycled and I like that.  The wire is in segments, lightly pushed into the ground and which I can lift off the pipes. This summer or next year, if this whole experiment of living here works, and if I can afford it, I will fence in a large area in which I will actually be able to walk around. 

Volevo un piccolo orticello vicino alla casa, che non richiedesse salire e scendere da muretti a secco, camminare nel terreno scosceso e pieno di pietre e che, a causa della decina di cani selvaggi che girano qui intorno e vi fanno i loro bisogni (non nei campi naturalmente, ma nei pressi della casa e su e giu` per il viale - che Dio benedica il loro piccoli cuori ingrati) deve essere recintato. Quindi Sergio e` riuscito a raccogliere una svariata collezione di materiale rinvenuto in giro per la terra e a creare questo orticello recintato a un costo di zero per il materiale e consistente in: due blocchi di tufo, tre blocchi di cemento, 6 pali dal vigneto scomparso da tempo, tubatura scartata (mi e` stato assicurato che assolutamente con contiene piombo), un palo della luce abbandonato da decenni, che ha segato, e un rotolo di rete trovato nel laboratorio/officina di mio padre. Non e` elegante e non e` bello, ma e` riciclato e questo mi piace. La rete e` in segmenti leggermente conficcati nel terreno che posso facilmente staccare dai tubi che li sostengono. Quest'estate o l'anno prossimo, se tutto questo esperimento di vita funziona e se me lo posso permettere, faro` recintare un pezzo di terreno molto piu` grande in cui potro` aggirarmi.

More ivy was torn down, some of it 10 ft. tall. I wish everything grew this well. Even though it has become a problem on some parts of the land, I will leave it alone along a few walls, since I hear it is important to certain insects and birds. 

Altra edera tagliata e sradicata, in alcuni punti altra 3 mt. Magari crescesse tutto cosi` rigogliosamente. Anche se e` diventata un problema in parti della campagna, la lascero` crescere lungo alcuni  muri perche`, a quanto pare, riveste importanza per certi insetti e uccelli. 

Hedera hibernica (Atlantic Ivy), you are so are so pretty, why are you so aggressive?

Hedera hibernica (Edera atlantica), sei cosi` bella, perche` sei cosi` aggressiva? 

In the midst of this ivy jungle we identified a Pecan tree that my father planted. It's the bare one in the foreground. In the grass below it I was able to find several pecans that Sergio will try to sprout. 

In tutta questa giungla di edera siamo riusciti ad identificare un albero di noce Pecan, piantato da mio padre. E` quello spoglio in primo piano. Sono riuscita a raccogliere una decina di noci che Sergio tentera` di far germogliare. 

We also collected some wild asparagus (bitter but very flavorful) and one blossom of the famous wild Ceglie "orchid" (Notation of Feb. 27: I have recently learned that even though here it is know by this name it is not an orchid, but rather a perennial tuber in the Iris family called Hermodactylus tuberosus.) There are quite a few of them blooming right now and I will mark the spot so it is not disturbed.

Abbiamo anche raccolto degli asparagi selvatici (amari ma molto saporiti) e un'esemplare della famosa "orchidea" cegliese (Nota del 27/2: Ho da poco imparato che anche se qui e` comunemente chiamata cosi` non e` un'orchidea, bensi` e` un tubero perenne della famiglia delle Iridaceae di nome Hermodactylus tuberosus.) In questo momento ne stanno fiorendo molte e voglio segnarmi il posto cosi` non verranno disturbate. 

Here are the little brats. Seven are regular clients, while a few others are commuters attracted by a couple of females in heat. All joking aside, the situation with strays in southern Italy is a real problem.  

Ecco i piccoli delinquenti. Circa sette sono clienti fissi, mentre gli altri sono pendolari attualmente attratti da un paio di cagne in calore. Scherzi a parte, la situazione dei cani randagi nell'Italia meridionale e` un guaio. 

Accidental Valentine

I had no intention of making a Valentine's Day image, but my consciousness must have been so inundated with hearts seen online during the past few days that I made this collage last night (the gel transfer is from a photo of my maternal grandmother, Antonietta Lamedica).

Non avevo alcuna intenzione di creare una immagine per la festa di San Valentino, ma si vede che avevo la mente cosi` inondata di cuori visti online negli ultimi giorni che ieri sera ho creato questo collage (la foto e` della nonna materna, Antonietta Lamedica).

When I got up this morning I started thinking about turning it into a Valentine, so I photographed it close-up,
Mi sono svegliata questa mattina con l'idea di farlo diventare un augurio per San Valentino e cosi` l'ho fotografato con lo zoom, 

then I imported the close-up image into the word processing program and added text. Next I went crazy trying to turn it into a JPG to export to iPhoto, finally managed to get it in there somehow, and there was my accidental Valentine. 

quindi ho importato la foto scattata con lo zoom nel programma di word processing e ho aggiunto il testo. Poi mi sono impazzita per convertirlo a una immagine JPG e esportarlo in iPhoto, in un modo o l'altro ci sono finalmente riuscita ed ecco il mio accidentale augurio per San Valentino.

Planting and eating

Today, the 4th full day of working on the land around the house in which I hope to soon live, Sergio,  who has been doing all the hard work around there, pruned a large and not too healthy tree of uncertain variety. I say it's a plum tree, but I think he said it's an almond. He's most likely right, but that means that the two plum trees that grew in that area are gone. Too bad, they were delicious - one purple and one greenish-yellow. In any case, we will be leaving some of the lower branches, and when the time comes to graft, the taller ones will be cut and their base will be used for the grafting of some sort of fruit.
Oggi, la quarta giornata intera di lavori sul terreno che si trova intorno alla casa dove spero presto di vivere, Sergio, l'amico che mi sta aiutando con tutti i lavori connessi alla campagna, ha potato un grande albero in cattiva salute e di varieta` incerta. Io dico che e` un susino, ma credo che lui abbia detto che e` un mandorlo. Sicuramente avra` ragione lui, ma allora significa che i due susini che crescevano in quel punto non esistono piu`. Peccato, erano deliziosi - uno viola e uno giallognolo. In ogni caso lasceremo crescere i rami inferiori e quando sara` il momento per innestare, taglieremo i rami piu` alti e sul rimanente innesteremo qualche frutto.

Our main project for today was to start a garden behind the house, which will be an experiment because, as I mentioned yesterday, while it is close to the house it gets only three hours of full sun per day. In addition the soil is very compacted and there are a gazillion pine cones everywhere. Sergio admitted it will be a miracle if the onions make it in that hard soil. 

In the old days every farm around here (don't know if it's the same in other regions of Italy) had a bamboo patch which was used, among other things - what other things I don't really know - to make fruit  drying racks or wattles. I'm very lucky to still have one and I don't know what kind of bamboo it is, but it's definitely not invasive or spreading because that's where it is and that's where it's always been since forever. So I was instructed to go down there and collect a few canes, which is what I did. 

Il progetto principale per oggi era di avviare un orto dietro alla casa, che sara` sperimentale perche`, come ho scritto ieri, mentre e` vicino alla casa prende solo tre ore di sole pieno al giorno. Inoltre il terreno e` abbastanza compatto e ci sono un bilione di pigne dappertutto. Sergio ha ammesso che sara` un miracolo se le cipolle ce la faranno in quel terreno cosi` compatto. 

In tempi passati da queste parti ogni campagna aveva il suo canneto (non so nel resto dell'Italia) che veniva usato tra l'altro - ma non so cos'altro - per fare i graticci che servivano per essiccare la frutta. Sono fortunata perche` il mio esiste ancora e non so che varieta` di bambu` sia, ma non e` certamente del tipo invasivo o che si moltiplica all'infinito perche` la` sta e la` e` sempre stato. Quindi mi e` stato chiesto di raccogliere qualche canna e cosi` ho fatto. 

The method we used was neither Permaculture nor traditional, but rather a pinch of both and a simplified version of what Sergio has been doing on his farm years. I would have liked to do sheet mulching, but lacked sufficient cardboard and straw. Next plot will be with that method. 

First he used a rake to pull the previously cut grass to the side, so that it was in between the rows, and then he cut the bamboo into segments and used them to mark the rows - four of them, one each for fava beans, bush peas, white onions and red onions. 

Il metodo che abbiamo usato non e` ne` Permacultura ne` tradizionale, ma piuttosto un pizzico di entrambi ed una versione semplificata di quello che Sergio fa nella sua campagna da anni. Avrei voluto fare la pacciamatura a tappeto con il cartone e la paglia, ma mancandomi entrambi non e` stato possibile. Per la prossima zona che coltivo usero` quel metodo.  

Prima di tutto con il rastrello ha tirato da parte l'erba precedentemente tagliata, cosi` da ammucchiarla tra una fila e l'altra, e poi ha tagliato le canne e le ha usate per indicare le file - quattro in tutto, una fila ciascuna per fave, piselli, cipolle bianche e cipolle rosse. 

Then with a hoe he made holes in the first row for the fava beans. 

Poi con una zappa ha fatto buchi nella prima fila per le fave.

For the first two rows, favas and peas, into each hole he poured some ash from the bonfire (I've got plenty), then placed three fava beans or peas inside and closed up the hole. I had my doubts about the ash because I had recently read that it made soil too alkaline, but he said that this is what they always do at his place, so this soil must like an addition of ash. All I know so far about the soil here is that it has a lot of clay and iron in it - in fact, as you can see, it's red. 

Per le prime due file, fave e piselli, in ogni buco ha versato della cenere dal falo` dell'altro giorno (ne ho in abbondanza) e vi ha messo tre fave o piselli, richiudendo quindi il buco. Avevo i miei dubbi per la cenere perche` avevo recentemente letto che rende il terreno troppo alcalino, ma mi ha detto che da lui fanno sempre cosi`, quindi si vede che a questo terreno piace la cenere. Per adesso del terreno di questa zona so solo che e` argilloso e contiene molto ferro - infatti, come potete vedere, e` rosso. 

Next he watered. Eventually the house will be hooked up to the cistern again, but for the moment I have to pull water up with a bucket. Poi ha innaffiato. Prima o poi l'impianto idrico sara` di nuovo collegato alla cisterna, ma per adesso e` necessario tirare su l'acqua con un secchio.  

Then, with the "high-tech" tool I showed you yesterday, he made holes for the onions, but since that tool wasn't adequate he made a more professional one......

Poi con l'attrezzo "ad alta tecnologia" mostratovi ieri ha fatto dei buchi per le cipolle, ma siccome quell'attrezzo non era adeguato ne ha fatto uno piu` professionale.....

Whereas ash was placed into the holes for the favas, in the case of the onions a bit of ash was sprinkled on top of the rows.

Mentre per le fave e i piselli la cenere e` stata messa direttamente nei buchi, per le cipolle un po' ne e` stata cosparsa sulle file. 

When the fava and pea plants get to be about 3 inches tall,  I will cut strips of cardboard, make holes in them and place them over the plants. Then I will pull the grass which by then will be dry over the cardboard.  I know I will mound soil around the onion plants, but can't remember if I'm supposed to do the cardboard and grass thing or not. 

Quando le fave e i piselli saranno alte 7 - 8 cm. tagliero` delle strisce di cartone, vi faro` dei buchi in corrispondenza delle piantine e ve le mettero` sopra. Quindi prendero` l'erba, che a quel punto sara` ben secca, e la mettero` sopra al cartone e intorno alle piantine. So che intorno alle cipolle dovro` fare dei cumuli di terreno, ma non ricordo se devo fare la cosa con il cartone o no.

Of course we had to do just a bit more ivy removal and in the process discovered a fig tree inside it struggling to survive. 

Naturalmente abbiamo dovuto togliere un altro po' di edera e nel farlo abbiamo scoperto che dentro c'era un fico che cercava di sopravvivere.

Today six of the dogs showed up to eat. I hadn't seen them in a while. 

Oggi sei cani sono venuti a mangiare. Era un po' che non li vedevo.

Uno dei tre cuccioli sopravvissuti. Si sta facendo carino non vi pare? Io lo chiamo "Pecora".

When I got back home I was exhausted and made myself a tasty "peasant" meal with broccoli rabe (rapini) cooked with laurel leaves, tomato sauce and garlic, and a glass of organic red wine (had to order it online). And yes, my wine glass is a Nutella jar with Tweety Bird on it. 

Sono tornata a casa stanchissima e mi sono fatta un saporito pranzetto "contadino" con cime di rape stufate con pomodoro, aglio e alloro e un bicchiere di vino rosso bio. Ebbene si`, il bicchiere e` un barattolo della Nutella con Tweety sopra.
