So pretty and so aggressive - Cosi` bella e cosi` aggressiva

A lot of work has been done since my last "agricultural" post on the 12th.
I started a compost pile by laying down some twigs and then layering green, brown, green, brown, soil, moisture and so on. And yes, I admit it, I also added a bit of diluted urine.
Sono stati fatti molti progressi dal mio ultimo post "agricolo" del 12. 
Ho avviato un cumulo per il compost, cominciando con un uno strato di ramoscelli, poi del verde, del marrone, verde, marrone, terreno, acqua e cosi` via. Ebbene si`, lo ammetto, ho aggiunto anche un po' di pipi` diluita. 

I planted another row of onions and prepared a row for potatoes that I will plant in the next few days. 

Ho piantato un'altra fila di cipolle e ho preparato una fila per delle patate che piantero' nei prossimi giorni. 

Sergio, who has been helping me with this endeavor for the last couple of weeks, grafted cherries onto some of the many wild cherry trees, Prunus mahaleb, that are present on the land. I wrote about this plant and my favorite use for it when I was attending the Permaculture course in 2007. He also grafted a couple of pear trees, one onto a wild pear and one onto an old cultivated pear. 

Sergio, la persona che mi sta aiutando a compiere questa impresa, ha innestato dei ciliegi su alcuni dei molti ciliegi selvatici, Prunus mahaleb, che crescono nella mia campagna. Ho scritto di questa pianta e dell'uso che preferisco farne (ma  tutto in inglese) quando ho frequentato il corso di Permacoltura nel 2007. Ha anche innestato un paio di peri, uno su un pero selvatico e uno su un vecchio pero coltivato. 

I wanted a small vegetable plot near the house, which would not require going up and down terraced walls and tramping through uneven soil and rocks and which, because of the 10 or so wild dogs that roam the place and poop everywhere (not out in the fields of course, but close to the house and up and down the driveways - bless their ungrateful little hearts) had to be enclosed. So Sergio was able to collect found bits of this and that around the place and make it at a cost of zero for the materials, which are: two limestone blocks, three cement blocks, 6 cement posts from the long-gone vineyard, discarded pipes from the remodel (I have been assured by all concerned that they contain absolutely no lead), a wooden light pole abandoned decades ago, that he cut down, and a roll of wire that we found in my father's workshop. 

It's funky, but it's all recycled and I like that.  The wire is in segments, lightly pushed into the ground and which I can lift off the pipes. This summer or next year, if this whole experiment of living here works, and if I can afford it, I will fence in a large area in which I will actually be able to walk around. 

Volevo un piccolo orticello vicino alla casa, che non richiedesse salire e scendere da muretti a secco, camminare nel terreno scosceso e pieno di pietre e che, a causa della decina di cani selvaggi che girano qui intorno e vi fanno i loro bisogni (non nei campi naturalmente, ma nei pressi della casa e su e giu` per il viale - che Dio benedica il loro piccoli cuori ingrati) deve essere recintato. Quindi Sergio e` riuscito a raccogliere una svariata collezione di materiale rinvenuto in giro per la terra e a creare questo orticello recintato a un costo di zero per il materiale e consistente in: due blocchi di tufo, tre blocchi di cemento, 6 pali dal vigneto scomparso da tempo, tubatura scartata (mi e` stato assicurato che assolutamente con contiene piombo), un palo della luce abbandonato da decenni, che ha segato, e un rotolo di rete trovato nel laboratorio/officina di mio padre. Non e` elegante e non e` bello, ma e` riciclato e questo mi piace. La rete e` in segmenti leggermente conficcati nel terreno che posso facilmente staccare dai tubi che li sostengono. Quest'estate o l'anno prossimo, se tutto questo esperimento di vita funziona e se me lo posso permettere, faro` recintare un pezzo di terreno molto piu` grande in cui potro` aggirarmi.

More ivy was torn down, some of it 10 ft. tall. I wish everything grew this well. Even though it has become a problem on some parts of the land, I will leave it alone along a few walls, since I hear it is important to certain insects and birds. 

Altra edera tagliata e sradicata, in alcuni punti altra 3 mt. Magari crescesse tutto cosi` rigogliosamente. Anche se e` diventata un problema in parti della campagna, la lascero` crescere lungo alcuni  muri perche`, a quanto pare, riveste importanza per certi insetti e uccelli. 

Hedera hibernica (Atlantic Ivy), you are so are so pretty, why are you so aggressive?

Hedera hibernica (Edera atlantica), sei cosi` bella, perche` sei cosi` aggressiva? 

In the midst of this ivy jungle we identified a Pecan tree that my father planted. It's the bare one in the foreground. In the grass below it I was able to find several pecans that Sergio will try to sprout. 

In tutta questa giungla di edera siamo riusciti ad identificare un albero di noce Pecan, piantato da mio padre. E` quello spoglio in primo piano. Sono riuscita a raccogliere una decina di noci che Sergio tentera` di far germogliare. 

We also collected some wild asparagus (bitter but very flavorful) and one blossom of the famous wild Ceglie "orchid" (Notation of Feb. 27: I have recently learned that even though here it is know by this name it is not an orchid, but rather a perennial tuber in the Iris family called Hermodactylus tuberosus.) There are quite a few of them blooming right now and I will mark the spot so it is not disturbed.

Abbiamo anche raccolto degli asparagi selvatici (amari ma molto saporiti) e un'esemplare della famosa "orchidea" cegliese (Nota del 27/2: Ho da poco imparato che anche se qui e` comunemente chiamata cosi` non e` un'orchidea, bensi` e` un tubero perenne della famiglia delle Iridaceae di nome Hermodactylus tuberosus.) In questo momento ne stanno fiorendo molte e voglio segnarmi il posto cosi` non verranno disturbate. 

Here are the little brats. Seven are regular clients, while a few others are commuters attracted by a couple of females in heat. All joking aside, the situation with strays in southern Italy is a real problem.  

Ecco i piccoli delinquenti. Circa sette sono clienti fissi, mentre gli altri sono pendolari attualmente attratti da un paio di cagne in calore. Scherzi a parte, la situazione dei cani randagi nell'Italia meridionale e` un guaio. 

Pruning and a huge Bonfire - Potatura e un grandissimo Falo`

This morning I bought a wheelbarrow and some new tools (and a 40lb. bag of dog food....). The "witch's broom", which I intend to use on nights with a full moon,  is for sweeping under olive trees and for clearing soil and leaves off of sidewalks. These brooms are so typical of this region that's it's odd to find out that they are now all made in China.

Questa mattina mi sono comprata una carriola e alcuni attrezzi nuovi (e un sacco da 20 chili di croccantini per cani....). La scopa "da strega", che intendo usare nelle notti di luna piena, serve per pulire sotto gli ulivi e per spazzare piazzali e viali. Queste scope sono cosi` tipiche di questa zona che e` sorprendente scoprire che adesso vengono tutte fabbricate in Cina. 

Then I went back to my place with my friend to continue the battle on ivy that we started on Monday, adding some serious pruning of Oleanders, Pittosporum and decorative shrubs.

Sono poi tornata in campagna, con l'amico che mi aiuta, per continuare la battaglia che avevamo iniziato lunedi` contro l'edera, aggiungendo la potatura di tanti oleandri, pittospori e un paio di cespugli ornamentali.

He also intervened in a conflict between some ivy, a pittosporum, an olive tree and a couple of ornamental trees, and settled the matter to everyone's satisfaction.
E` anche intervenuto in un conflitto tra dell'edera, un pittosporo, un ulivo e un paio di alberi ornamentali, risolvendo la questione in modo favorevole per tutti. 

I stopped to look at some Eucalyptus trees my father planted for me, because I kept going on about how much I loved them, and a plum almond tree in bloom.
Mi sono fermata per guardare alcuni Eucalipti che mio padre ha piantato per me, perche` ripetevo sempre che mi piacevano tanto, ed un susino mandorlo in fiore. 

Then things got hot. My friend decided that the weather and lack of wind made it the perfect time to burn dry branches and pine cones that had been piled up there for a few years. I was very hesitant because fires, particularly large ones, scare me but since he had experience and no fear and I had fear and no experience, I gave in. I think it was the largest fire I have ever been so close to. 

Poi le cose hanno cominciato a riscaldarsi. Il mio amico ha deciso che il tempo e la mancanza di vento rendevano il momento perfetto per mettere fuoco alla grande massa di rami e pigne secche che venivano accumulate da anni in un punto. Io ero molto restia perche` gli incendi, particolarmente quelli grandi, mi fanno paura, ma poiche` lui aveva esperienza e niente paura, e io avevo paura e niente esperienza, ho ceduto. Credo di non essere mai stata vicina a un fuoco cosi` grande. 

The neighbors for at least a mile around were inundated with smoke. Since I was told that the embers will smolder for several days, I'm just hoping that the trees will still be there tomorrow. 

Tutta la compagna circostante si e` riempita di fumo. Poiche` mi e` stato detto che il carboni arderanno per un paio di giorni, spero solo che domani gli alberi saranno ancora li`.

I went out to my place today with a friend who has the right tools and we spent 7 hours liberating trees and walls from Algerian Atlantic Ivy (Hedera hibernica) and pruning fruit trees. He did the hard work and I dragged branches into piles and interrupted constantly to say what's that tree and let's do that one! It was an exhausting day, but the sun, all that bright green and the birds chirping, made me feel like I was in Heaven. I already know where I will place the hammock. I hope God grants me some good years here.
Oggi sono andata nella mia campagna con un amico che ha gli attrezzi giusti e abbiamo passato 7 ore a liberare alberi e muretti dall'edera algerina atlantica (Hedera hibernica) e a potare alberi da frutta. E` stata una giornata molto stancante, ma il sole, tutto quel verde e gli uccelli che cantavano mi hanno fatta sentire come se stessi in Paradiso. Gia` so dove mettero` l'amaca. Spero che Dio mi conceda di trascorrere alcuni anni in questi luoghi.

C'e` ancora molto da fare - Se ingrandite le foto potete a stento vedere il mio amico in tutta quell'edera.

Making progress, but some of the roots will have to stay or the walls might come tumbling down. 

Si fanno progressi, ma bisogna lasciare alcune radici o i muri potrebbero crollare.

We're done with this area for now, no more ivy on the walls.

Per adesso basta con questa zona, niente piu` edera sui muretti.

But first I'm taking a break and letting the sun kiss my face. 

Prima pero` mi riposo un attimo e mi faccio baciare in faccia dal sole.

We find this huge mass of ivy and maybe an almond tree barely surviving behind it. 

Troviamo questo enorme cespuglio di edera e un albero, forse un mandorlo, che a stento sopravvive. 

This one is free too, although we left some ivy on one side for privacy, mine and my neighbor's.

Anche questo e` libero. Abbiamo lasciato una parte dell'edera per la privacy mia e del vicino.

Time for another break for me, while I admire a rock.

E` ora di riposarmi di nuovo e nel frattempo ammiro una pietra.

 After more ivy removal (there's a really evil thorny one called Smilax Aspera) and more tree pruning, I give one last look at what's in front of me, and call it a day.

Dopo ancora altra estirpazione di edera (ce n'e` una varieta` spinosa antipaticissima)* e altri alberi potati, do un ultimo sguardo a quello che mi sta difronte e dico "basta per oggi". 

*Grazie a un commento di Ornella ho fatto delle ricerche e ho scoperto che e` la Smilax aspera, comunemente detta "stracciabraghe".

Secondo l'articolo di Wikipedia   "I fiori, molto profumati, sono piccoli, giallicci o verdastri, poco vistosi e raccolti in piccole ombrelle; fioriscono, nelle regioni a clima mediterraneo, da agosto ad ottobre.

I frutti sono bacche rosse, riunite in grappoli, che giungono a maturazione in autunno. Contengono semi minuscoli e rotondi. Insipide e poco appetibili per l'uomo, costituiscono una fonte di nutrimento per numerose specie di uccelli." 

Quindi faro` attenzione a tagliarla solo intorno agli alberi da frutta e a lasciarla crescere vicino ai muri e negli angoli dove non mi puo` aggredire.
